What are Bony Fish?
Most tropical reef fish belong to the class of Bony Fish or Osteichthyes - fish that have a skeleton made of bone.
The vast majority of fish are Osteichthyes, and this is the largest class of vertebrates that exists, consisting of over 29,000 species, which can be divided into several subclasses. Through the benefit of morphological adaptations they were able to populate almost all aquatic habitats on earth.
The Ocean Sunfish is the largest bony fish in the world. Specimens have been observed up to 3.33 m in length and weighing up to 2,300 kg. Other large bony fish include the Atlantic Blue Marlin - up to 820 kg, the Black Marlin, and some Sturgeon species. While a small carp relative Paedocypris progenetica - living in peat forest swamps of Sumatra - is supposed to be the smallest fish. The species reaches a maximum size of 10.3 mm with females reaching maturity at 7.9 mm.
