Sharks & Rays Reef Plus
2 days, 2 dives, Age 15+
Completed the Tropical Reef Diver Course, but want to learn more? The Sharks-&-Rays Reef-Plus Course is a 2 day course designed to take your learning further if you are interested in Sharks and other Cartilaginous Fish.
What are Sharks and Rays?
Sharks, Rays and Chimaeras form the family of Cartilaginous fish species or what zoologists call the class of Chondrichthyes - fish with a skeleton made entirely of cartilage.
They differ from other bony fish such as Tuna or Marlin as they do not have a swimbladder and need to swim continuously to avoid sinking to the bottom. They are considered some of the most primative animals on the planet - fossilised Shark remains have been dated at over 400 million years old - 150 million years before dinosaurs walked the earth.
Sharks can have up to 3,000 teeth at one time, arranged in up to 5 rows. When one tooth is damaged or lost, it is replaced by another. Most sharks do not chew their food, but gulp it down whole to be digested later in their stomachs.
What will I learn?
The 2-day reef-plus course introduces you to ??? the evolution of Sharks and their relatives. Take a look at the largest fish in the sea - the Whale Shark, and find out why so little is known about the giant of the sea.
In-water activities are encouraged to further cement your learning. You’ll participate in experiments and excursions to learn about Sharks and Rays and gain hands-on experience with real marine animals. We’ll take you to some of the best dive sites of Thailand, where you’ll observe and interact with a huge variety of marine species.
