Venemous Species Reef Plus
2 days, 2 dives, Age 15+
Completed the Tropical Reef Diver Course, but want to learn more? The Venomous Species Reef-Plus Course is a 2 day course designed to take your learning further if you are interested in the venomous and poisonous members of the aquatic world.
What are Venomous Marine Species?
A venomous marine animal is one that is capable of producing venom or inflicting a poisonous bite or sting. Most marine animals have evolved to use their poison for self-protection, rather than for hunting, although some species do use venom to quell their prey.
Examples of marine life that can be classed as venomous include Jellyfish, Anemones, Stingrays, Sea Snakes, Cone Shells, Stinging Coral, Lionfish, Scorpionfish & Stonefish.
In almost all cases of poisoning, the toxin interferes with the nerve membranes and inhibits the passage of nerve impulses. The physical symptons may be felt as nausea, drowsiness, weakness, or vomiting, but severe poisoning can proceed to paralysis and even death.
Poisons from marine animals may become important in the treatment of human diseases. It may be possible to use certain toxins to treat hearing diseases, intestinal troubles, infections, tumors and other ailments.
